True fusion between unchangeable past and cutting-edge future

Dubai

There are experiences and places in time that seem so singular to us that we think we’ll never be able to return to them and they can never be repeated. Thus, it is to my surprise that I am to be reunited with Dubai, less than a year after visiting it in 2022, and leaving most certain that I wouldn’t visit it again.    Dubai Burj Khalifa The Creek

Dubai, unique and intriguing metropolis, jewel of the desert dramatically overlooking the Persian Gulf. A modest fishing village that in less than two hundred years became the symbol of the United Arab Emirates, eclipsing its rich neighbor Abu Dhabi.

Real and surreal at the same time, Dubai is a true fusion between tradition and innovation, between the indelible story of history and a present that is already like the future, lying on the flat plain of the desert yet sending its soaring and avant-garde architecture high into the sky.

Dubai is an infinite succession of skyscrapers that form a very striking skyline at nightfall when everything begins to turn on and shine, transforming the city into a gigantic jewel framed by millions of shining gems. The stunning, silver, eye-shaped Museum of the Future, covered in Arabic calligraphy, is without a doubt the gem that stands out among all the others. But there is also the elegant and majestic Burj Khalifa, with its spectacle of fountains that dance at its feet, and the Burj al-Arab, a sail-shaped hotel 280 meters high, which some refer to as the “only seven-star hotel in the world”. These buildings are all icons, and representative of Dubai’s excess and opulence.

But beneath the sparkling surface of new luxury and abundance, there is another Dubai, more traditional, simpler, more linked to the past, and even with more mysteries to discover. It is the Islamic city of the reserved mosques, the Grand Bur, the souks, the Al Fahidi neighborhood, and the Dubai Creek with its dhow barges over a century old, boats that began as trade ships transporting goods from Africa and India.

So I land again today in Dubai, where two men dressed in dishdasha check visitors’ passports and provide a complimentary SIM card along with the entry stamps. I cross the palatial and pharaonic airport, imagining the new scenes, images, and experiences that await me outside, with tUpdateemperatures in September that will reach 40 degrees Celsius.
